If you are on the prowl for a professional digital camcorder, I have to assume you already have experience in the field. You probably have an idea of what you are looking for. But in case you are overwhelmed. Let me touch on a few things of basic note.
Affording Your Professional Digital Camcorder
Probably this thought is foremost in your mind. These types of professional grade cameras range in price greatly and can get up to a cost of more than the average car. More than likely your local financial institution will give you a sideways glance, when you announce that you need a thirty thousand dollar loan to buy a camera. Life can be filled with sideways glances. But there are several cameras out there, that may put a dent in your checking account, but that won’t cause you to go into debt to obtain them.
Your Professional Digital Camcorder and Good Quality
There has been many a film that has been ruined with bad sound quality. Most professional digital camcorders will come with a microphone attached. Make sure this part of the devise will do all the things you need it to do. And if sound has to be recorded at a distance, can you hook a a microphone, and you can set somewhere other that right on the camera. Setting that are already built into the camera will save you time, and thus money, in the long run.
The speed of technology has us running to keep up. Just in the last few years the film industry has seen several new formats make an appearance. You need to be able to be flexible. You will never know, from project to project what format you may find your self needing to record in, so make sure your camera can be as flexible as you can.
Other Considerations for Your Professional Digital Camcorder
Remember that if you aren’t going to be in a stationary setting, you are going to have to carry this camera around. I don’t care who you are, or how good a shape you are in, after hours, even six pounds can start to feel heavy. With the technology of modern day, we are always making things smaller and lighter. I have seen professional grade cameras on the market at only a little over two pounds. Again, you never know what your next project will entail, so don’t assume, you will never need to carry the camera.
Since we are talking professional levels, that would imply that the camcorder will be used most all day every day. This is going to require constant power. If you are in a stationary mode, you can simply plug the camera in, provided you can find a power source. It wouldn’t hurt to add an extension cord or two to your bag of tricks.
If we are talking battery power, I can’t stress enough to make sure you have extra batteries and that they are charged. You can’t be in the middle of work and have to quit for hours, cause your battery died. Make sure the battery life on the professional digital camcorder you chose is going to be sufficient and that the purchase of extra batteries is an option.
A small thing to consider, as well, is getting a remote for the camera. The best way not to shake the camera is not to touch the camera. Might seem like a trivial thing, but you never know when you might need the camera to sit perfectly still.
In the end the best resources you have are going to be others in the field. Presumably, you already have a circle of acquaintances in your field. Talk with them, and learn from them. There is no greater teacher than experience, so borrow theirs.
