HD, or High Definition, is today’s standard. Though with the rate of technology, who is to say how long that will be. As it stands, it is hard to find a television or camera that isn’t HD. And if you are looking at a professional level, I don’t think that particular requirement will be hard to find.

What You Might Want to Consider When Shopping For Your Professional HD Camcorder

Weight. These aren’t the little pocket cameras that are all the rage now. This camera, most likely, will sit on a stand of some sort or be carried on your shoulder. No matter how strong you are, or how much you work out, over time even 5 pounds can start to weigh on you. Though technology has come a long way from the big bulk VHS camcorders the recreational users had to carry, they can still be a pain to carry around. Though, if you do your homework, you might be able to find as light as just a hair over two pounds.

Power. They have yet to create the self powering professional HD camcorder. Since the word professional implies that this device will be used all day, you need to make sure the battery can keep up. No one wants to stop in the middle of inspiration and wait on a battery. That said, keep a spare or two charging, so your time interrupted is kept at a minimal. If you are going to be working in a stationary setting, and can jack in somewhere, make sure you have a decent length power cord and an extension cord or two. Though, I doubt a camcorder pulls a lot of juice, but since you will be using it most of every day it might not be a bad idea to at least check what kind of amperage the device will be using.

Control. Beyond the basic need of controlling functions on the camera itself, the best way not to shake a camera is not to touch it. Though more common in recreational usage, the idea of a employing the use of a remote control in a professional setting is not a bad one.

Achieve Good Quality with Your Professional HD Camcorder

Formatting. We now have computer screens that differ from our television screens which, in turn, differ from the “big screen”. We can even buy our movies in Blue Ray, which requires the consumer to then go out and buy more hardware to play that format. As a film maker, you are responsible for meeting the needs of the industry. They can vary widely on what you intent is. Most likely that intent changes with each project. Make sure your professional HD camcorder can change from one format to the other, saving you time and money later on down the road.

Sound. To many good films are ruined by poor sound quality. Everything can be running smoothly and a slight breeze can become so loud it can hurt your ears. Make sure your camera has a good microphone attachment, and that there are settings on the camera to help you later in the editing process. Of course, you will have to have good sound editing software to make any touch ups.

Affording Your Professional HD Camcorder

Money. Professional grade anything, never comes cheap. These types of cameras can run into the tens of thousands; costing you more than your car did. No one wants to have to take out a loan for a camera. The average financial institution would probably give you funny looks. But if you aren’t backed by some sort of financing then that may just have to be a trip you have to make. Don’t be disheartened though, there are cheaper cameras available that may put a dent in your savings, but not break the bank.

At the end of the day, it is about knowing what you want and need in a professional HD camcorder, and doing the research to find it. Talking with others in your field could save you a lot of time, and give you more tools to use to make the right decision for your film making needs.
